CO2 Laser vs CoolPeel: Which Resurfacing Treatment Is Right for You?

CO2 laser resurfacing and CoolPeel are often described as if they were rivals. They are closer to two settings on the same idea. Both use a carbon dioxide laser, both deliver it fractionally, and both resurface the skin. What separates them is how deep they go, how much heat they leave behind, and how much recovery they ask of you.

What they have in common

A CO2 laser emits infrared light at a wavelength that water absorbs strongly. Because skin is mostly water, the energy is absorbed almost immediately and removes a microscopic column of tissue. Both treatments are fractional: the beam is split into a grid of narrow columns, so only part of the surface is treated at once and the untouched skin between the columns drives healing. That is what made CO2 resurfacing recoverable in the first place.

Where they differ

CO2 resurfacing reaches deep into the dermis. Each column removes tissue at its centre and heats the tissue around it, and that heated zone is where much of the long-term collagen remodelling comes from. The result is the most corrective resurfacing available, and the recovery is real: several days of visible healing and weeks of residual redness.

CoolPeel uses the same wavelength with very short pulses at deliberately superficial settings. The pulse is fast enough that the treated point is removed before heat has time to spread, so there is far less inflammation and swelling, and the surface usually closes within a day or two. The honest trade is that less heat also means less deep remodelling, which is why CoolPeel is planned as a series rather than a single event.

Choose CO2 if

  • Your main concern is atrophic acne scarring, deep sun damage or lines that stay when your face is at rest.
  • Gentler treatments have not been enough.
  • You can plan for genuine downtime and would rather do one demanding thing than many mild ones.

Choose CoolPeel if

  • You want smoother texture, brighter tone or help with superficial sun damage.
  • You cannot take a week out, and you are comfortable with a more modest result per session.
  • You want to maintain a result from a deeper treatment without repeating its downtime.

What both of them ask of you

Low downtime does not mean low risk. CoolPeel is still an ablative laser, and both treatments can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones and on recently tanned skin. Both depend on rigorous sun protection afterward, because results keep developing for months as collagen remodels and the sun can undo much of that gain. Melasma is a specific exception for both: heat can make it worse, and it needs a different approach.

Frequently asked questions

Is CoolPeel just a weaker CO2 laser?

It is the same wavelength and the same fractional delivery, with much shorter pulses at superficial settings. That cuts recovery from about a week to a day or two, and it also cuts the depth of the result, which is why CoolPeel is a series rather than a single treatment.

Which is better for acne scars?

Deep atrophic acne scarring belongs with CO2 resurfacing. CoolPeel helps superficial texture, but a series of light treatments is not a gentler route to the same result for deep scars. Rolling and boxcar scars generally respond better than ice-pick scars.

How much downtime does each one have?

CO2: several days you will not want to be seen, then weeks of pinkness that makeup can usually cover once you are cleared. CoolPeel: a day or two of redness, then several days of light flaking. Either way, makeup waits until your provider clears you.

Do they hurt?

Topical numbing goes on first for both. Treatment feels hot and prickly with a snapping quality, and cool air is used for comfort. Afterward it feels like a sunburn: a day or two for CoolPeel, a few days for CO2.

Are they safe for deeper skin tones?

Both need real caution rather than being ruled out. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the main risk, and it is managed with the right settings, skin preparation beforehand and strict sun protection. microneedling is often the lower-risk route for deeper skin tones, so ask about it at your consultation.

Will either one tighten loose skin?

Not meaningfully. Both improve skin quality, but resurfacing treats the skin rather than lifting tissue. Loose skin that hangs is a different problem with different answers.

How much do they cost?

CO2 resurfacing is $1,500 including your aftercare skincare, and CoolPeel is $850. More detail in what CO2 costs at Alcove.
