Why Fall Is the Best Time to Start Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is not really a single appointment. It is the appointment plus the months that follow, while your skin heals and builds new collagen. That is why timing matters, and why fall is the easiest season to start.

Results build for months, and the sun can undo them

After a CO2 treatment, the surface heals in days to weeks, but the deeper collagen remodelling continues for months. That is why the final result is judged months after treatment, not weeks. Throughout that time, treated skin has to be protected from the sun. Without that protection, much of the gain is lost.

In an Atlanta summer that is hard work. In the shorter, cooler days from fall through winter, staying out of strong sun is simply easier.

Less risk of pigment problems

The most common significant complication of laser resurfacing is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, dark patches that can follow the heat and injury of treatment. The risk is higher in deeper skin tones and on recently tanned skin. Starting once your summer tan has faded, and healing during months with less sun, works in your favour.

Time to fit downtime and a series around your calendar

  • CO2 resurfacing ($1,500, including your aftercare skincare) means several days of visible healing and weeks of residual redness. Fall gives you room to plan that well ahead of any event.
  • CoolPeel ($850) usually needs only a day or two of recovery, but it works as a series spaced several weeks apart. Starting in fall lets a series build through the winter.
  • The Enlighten peel for pigment involves several days of peeling, and like the lasers it depends on sun protection afterward.

A few honest caveats

  • Sun protection still matters in winter. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is part of every resurfacing plan, whatever the season.
  • Avoid treating the week of an event, even with a light treatment like CoolPeel.
  • Melasma behaves differently. Heat can make it worse, so it needs its own approach. Tell your provider if you have it.

Frequently asked questions

When will I see my final results?

The surface heals in days, but collagen keeps remodelling for months, so the final result is judged months after treatment. Starting in fall means your skin does most of that work through the darker, cooler months.

How long should I stay out of the sun after laser?

For months, not a fortnight. Treated skin has to be protected while it remodels, and unprotected sun can undo much of the gain. Daily broad-spectrum SPF continues long term after CO2 resurfacing or CoolPeel.

Can I start before a holiday party?

With enough lead time. CoolPeel needs at least a week or two before an event, and CO2 needs a clear week plus weeks of pinkness afterward. Plan backward from the date, not forward from today.

I still have my summer tan. Should I wait?

Yes. Recently tanned skin, including self-tanner, raises the risk of dark patches after laser. Waiting until the tan has faded is the safer plan.

Is fall a good time for a peel too?

Yes. The Enlighten peel involves several days of visible peeling and depends on strict sun protection afterward, so the same seasonal logic applies.

Which laser should I start with?

It depends on what you are treating and how much downtime you can take. Read CO2 Laser vs CoolPeel, or let your provider recommend one at your consultation.
