Uneven pigment is the concern people find hardest to shift and easiest to make worse. The Enlighten peel is a medium-depth peel aimed at pigment. It goes further than a surface treatment and can genuinely improve tone, but it works best inside a plan that includes topical therapy and relentless sun protection, not as a standalone fix.
How it works
A chemical peel applies an acid solution to create a controlled injury to a set depth, so the treated layers shed and are replaced. A medium-depth peel passes through the epidermis into the upper layer of the dermis. That is further than a superficial peel goes and considerably less far than an ablative laser.
The extra depth matters because pigment does not all sit at the same level. Some is in the epidermis, where surface treatments can reach it. Some has dropped deeper, where it is far more stubborn. Pigment-focused peels combine exfoliation, which removes pigment-laden cells, with agents that reduce how much melanin is made in the first place.
What it treats
- Sun-related pigmentation and uneven tone, which is generally more responsive than melasma.
- Melasma, where the goal is control rather than cure.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and flat brown spots, once a spot is confirmed benign.
- Texture and fine lines that come with sun damage.
- Skin that has plateaued on a course of superficial peels, if the concern genuinely sits deeper.
A straight word on melasma
Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition. A peel can improve it and help keep it under control, but no treatment cures it. Going in with that framing leads to better decisions and less disappointment. It also means daily broad-spectrum sun protection, including protection against visible light, for the long term rather than for a fortnight afterward.
What recovery looks like
This is not a low-downtime treatment. Expect genuine, visible peeling over several days, and plan the appointment around it. Meaningful change usually comes from fewer sessions than a superficial peel course, spaced further apart.
The risk that shadows every pigment treatment is the one it is meant to fix: inflammation stimulates pigment cells, and a peel is a controlled inflammation. Applied to prepared skin, with sun protection afterward, it clears more pigment than it provokes. That is why preparation and aftercare are part of the treatment, not extras.
Cost
At Alcove, the Enlighten peel is $900 and is sold as a 28-day resurfacing course. Your provider will walk you through the plan at your consultation. Read more on the Enlighten peel page, or compare it with CoolPeel if texture is your bigger concern.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my pigment look darker after the peel?
That is expected while you are peeling: treated pigment often looks darker or sharper before it sheds. What to watch for is skin that keeps darkening as it heals instead of clearing. Report that early rather than waiting.
Why do I need to use products before the peel?
Priming calms pigment-producing cells in advance, so your skin is less likely to rebound with more pigment after the peel. It is part of the protocol, not an upsell, and skipping it raises your risk.
Does the Enlighten peel hurt?
More than a light peel. Warmth builds to stinging or burning that peaks in the first minutes and then eases, and a fan is used for comfort. Afterward it feels like a sunburn for a day or two.
How many peels will I need?
Fewer than a superficial peel course, spaced weeks to months apart so your skin fully recovers and the result shows before deciding on another. For melasma, think of it as periodic treatment within ongoing care.
Is it safe for deeper skin tones?
It needs real care rather than being ruled out. Priming, conservative depth, the right agents and strict sun protection are how the risk of rebound pigment is managed. microneedling is another option worth asking about.
Can I have it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Medium-depth peels are deferred during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and pregnancy-related melasma often improves on its own afterward.
Is a peel or a laser better for pigment?
They work differently. A peel clears pigment through controlled shedding plus agents that slow pigment production. Lasers use heat, and heat is one of the drivers of melasma, so lasers like CO2 resurfacing need significant caution there. Compare the lasers in CO2 Laser vs CoolPeel.
I have a new dark spot. Can I treat it with a peel?
Not until it has been checked medically. Any spot that is new, changing, irregular or asymmetric needs a diagnosis before any cosmetic treatment.

CO2 laser resurfacing at Alcove is $1,500, and the aftercare skincare you need while your skin heals is included. Here is what that covers and how to compare it with other quotes.

Laser results keep developing for months, and sun exposure can undo much of the gain. That is why the darker months are the easiest time to start resurfacing.
